CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts – John Murphy
joins the Boston College baseball staff as a volunteer assistant coach
for the 2015-16 season. The Sacred Heart graduate was drafted in the
sixth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft
by the New York Yankees.
“The first two priorities in hiring anyone to be around our
players are character and work ethic. Both of those are off the charts
for Murph,” said head coach Mike Gambino.
“He turned himself from a fairly lightly-recruited, somewhat overlooked
player in high school into a Cape Cod League All-Star and sixth-round
pick basically on his work ethic and will to succeed. He's got a great
baseball knowledge and will be a huge asset in helping our boys develop
both on the field and into men. I couldn't be more excited to have him
start his college coaching career with us.”
Murphy’s duties with the Eagles will include working with infielders and hitters and video analysis.
The Seymour, Conn., native was the starting shortstop for the
Northeast Conference Champion Pioneers in 2012 and 2011. He was named to
the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America third team
and the ABCA First-Team All-Northeast Region Team in his senior season.
He earned All-NEC First-Team honors as a senior and second-team honors
as a junior. Murphy also took home All-NEC Tournament Team accolades in
2012, going 5-for-10 with four RBIs, including a 3-for-3 performance in
the championship game. In his sophomore season, he was named NEC
Tournament MVP, going 5-for-13 with a home run, four runs and five RBIs.
He led Sacred Heart as a senior with a .367 batting average, 76 hits,
13 doubles, eight triples and 47 RBIs. The Pioneers fell in the finals
that season.
In 2012, he batted .308 and collected Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star honors while playing for the Bourne Braves.
As the highest draft pick in Sacred Heart history, Murphy played
two years in the New York-Penn League and the South Atlantic League,
recording 84 hits, including 11 doubles, 28 RBIs and 19 stolen bases
over two seasons.
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Sacred Heart. He currently resides in Brighton, Mass.
