Big First Half Helps Calvin Down Western New England, 15-6

Skates, Ruby score two goals each for Golden Bears

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. (March 23, 2018) –
A 12-goal first half performance helped the Calvin (Mich.) College women's lacrosse team post a 15-6 win over Western New England University on Friday morning at Dever Park. 
Top Performers
• Freshman Danielle Skates (Berlin, Conn.) and sophomore Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the Golden Bears with two goals each, while freshman Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) and sophomore Lindsey Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) both scored once.
• Calvin was led by junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) who tallied four goals and two assists.
• Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich.) also scored four goals, while junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa.) chipped in with three each.
Game Review
Davio staked the Knights to a 1-0 lead with a free position goal just 55 seconds into the contest, before burying another free position strike at the 28:11 mark.
The senior completed her hat trick on a feed from Pepper with 23:37 on the clock, and Calvin eventually led 8-0 following Slachter's unassisted tally five minutes later.
Miller got the Golden Bears on the board with 17:54 to play in the period, but the Knights responded with a 4-0 run to open up a 12-1 advantage. Phillips scored the final goal of the half with 2:05 to play as Western New England trailed by ten (12-2) at the break.
Calvin established its largest lead (14-2) with goals from Verrett and Davio early in the second half. Western New England scored four straight, however, with two each by Skates and Ruby, to close the gap to eight (14-6) with 4:30 remaining.
Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich.) extended the final margin to nine with a goal late in regulation.
Notes
• Calvin outshot Western New England 22-12 and held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls.
• Sophomore Olivia Truenow (Franklin, Mass.) led the Golden Bears with a team-high three ground balls.
Up Next
Western New England (0-6) opens Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Curry at Golden Bear Stadium.
