NEW YORK – Utilizing an 8-0 scoring run from midway in the first half through the second stanza, the Harvard women's lacrosse team picked up a 15-6 win in its Ivy League opener at Columbia Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson, which kept the Lions scoreless for a period of 30:38 of the game between the first and second halves, improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League, while the Lions fall to 1-2 and 0-1.
Marisa Romeo led all players with four goals and five points, while Julia Glynn assisted on three tallies and finished with four points. Hennessey collected six ground balls and caused three turnovers, and goalie Kelly Weis turned aside seven shots to earn her third victory of the season.
In the first half, Romeo got the Crimson on the scoreboard just 41 seconds into the game, and Keeley
MacAfee and Maeve McMahon followed with back-to-back goals at 27:03 and 26:45, respectively, to give Harvard an early 3-0 lead. After Columbia got back within one, 3-2, Eliza Guild found the back of the net at 17:51, and Alexis Nicolia added a goal off a free-position attempt at the 14:55 mark, 5-2.
The Crimson continued to control the play midway through the stanza, as Guild added another tally at 11:25, before McMahon tallied her second score off an assist from Glynn with 9:58 remaining, making it 7-2. Just 14 seconds later, Glynn notched a goal to increase the advantage to six scores, 8-2.
In the final minutes of the half, Romeo made it a seven-goal lead, 9-2, at the 4:55 mark, and she capped the scoring with a tally with 17 seconds remaining, sending Harvard to the break with a 10-2 advantage.
Nicolia opened the scoring in the second with a free-position goal at 26:36, as the Crimson extended its run to 8-0. Columbia ended its drought with a tally at 21:09, as Harvard kept the Lions from scoring for 30:38 of action. Romeo notched her fourth goal with 19:44 remaining, as the Crimson went back up by nine, 12-3. Romeo then assisted on a tally by Audrey Todd just 16 seconds later, as Harvard grabbed a 10-goal lead, 13-3.
Harvard continued to pull away, as Hennessey upped the score to 14-3 with an unassisted tally with 15:07 to go. Meghan Bauer tacked on another goal for the Crimson with 3:39 remaining, 15-5.
The Crimson outshot the Lions, 28-16, and owned the edge in ground balls, 25-18. Harvard went 15-of-15 on clear attempts, making the team a perfect 53-of-53 on clears this season.
Up next, the Crimson will open its home slate against New Hampshire Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m. The game, to be held at Jordan Field, will be shown live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
