Cronin drives in game-winning run in eighth

BC HIGHLIGHTS

• Senior Joe Cronin led the way for the Eagles with a 2-for-4 day, plating the game-winning run in the eighth, breaking a 2-2 tie.
• Freshman Gian Martellini tied a career high with three RBIs on the day, notching a two-run double in the eighth.
• Senior John Nicklas picked up his second win in as many games, throwing a scoreless eighth, retiring the only three batters faced, two by way of the K.

KEY PLAYS

• Junior Michael Strem led off the eighth with a double and Cronin plated him with a single to break the 2-2 tie.  
• The Eagles added three more runs in the inning to put the game away, as Martellini drove in two with a double and freshman Dominic Hardaway scored on a throwing error.
• Junior Justin Dunn threw the ninth, and although he gave up a run, he forced a game-ending double play for the BC win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Northwestern took an early, 1-0 lead in the first as Jack Dunn hit the first pitch of the game through the left side for a double and Joe Hoscheit plated him with a double to right. With two down and runners on the corners, junior right-handed starter Mike King used three straight pitches to get out of the jam with a strikeout looking.
• The Wildcats made it a two-run game in the sixth with two outs. Connor Lind led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Ben Dickey singled up the middle to plate Lind.
• The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Strem knocked his first double of the season to center and sophomore Donovan Casey plated him with a single through the right side. Casey moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. With one out and new pitcher RHP Tommy Bordingnon on the hill, Martellini knock a hard grounder to third, which Lind fielded and made the play to first, allowing Casey to cross the plate and tie the game.
• The Eagles broke the tie in the eighth and scored four to take the lead. Junior Johnny Adams started the inning with a walk and Strem moved him over with sac bunt. He took third on a wild pitch and after Casey was intentionally walked, Cronin laced one up the middle to put the Eagles up, 3-2. With two on, Martellini doubled to left to clear the bases. Hardaway came in to pinch run and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Catcher Jack Claeys' throw sailed high, allowing Hardaway to score before the end of the inning.
• Dunn came in for the ninth and allowed a lead-off single to Grant Peikert. Peikert landed on third on two balk calls. Dunn got Dickey swinging for the first out but Jack Dunn plated his teammate with a single through the right side. The Eagles turned a 643 double play to end the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Boston College is off to the best start in program history, going 8-0. The eight-game win streak is the longest for the Eagles since 2005.
• For the second game in a row, the Eagles came from behind to win after holding a lead in the first six games of the season.
• For the fourth time this season, BC did not record an error.
• Casey extended his team-leading on-base streak to 17 games while Adams extended his on-base streak to 13 games.
