It marked the third-straight game Metoyer posted double-figures, posting a season-high 15 points and adding six rebounds and four assists. Skinner posted a personal-best 13 points, adding four rebounds. Senior captain AnnMarie Healy and senior Shilpa Tummala chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively. Healy had a crucial 11 points in the fourth quarter and added a team-high seven boards.
Rice (0-5) was paced by Jasmine Goodwine with 22 points and seven rebounds. Shani Rainey added
13 points and seven boards.
Playing in front of her hometown crowd, Metoyer was involved with the first seven points, as the Crimson jumped out to a 20-8 lead with 1:18 to play in the first quarter. Harvard started the game with back-to-back threes by Raster and Metoyer and ended its first-quarter scoring with a Metoyer three from the wing. The Owls scored the final four points and Harvard held a 20-12 lead at the first break.
The two teams traded baskets to start the second quarter, but a 5:20 scoring drought (0-of-7) led Rice to pull within three, 24-21, with 2:17 to play before halftime. Tummala ended the Rice spurt and Harvard would not allow another Owl basket before the break. The Crimson outpaced the Owls 6-2 to end the quarter and held a 30-23 advantage at the break.
Rice came out of the break on a tear, scoring 14 of the first 21 points to knot the game at 37-37 with 5:50 to play in the third quarter. Rainey and Goodwine combined for 11 points over the run. Tummala ended the run with a jumper, but the Owls would not relent, posting eight unanswered points before Metoyer hit a triple at the buzzer. Overall, Rice had outscored Harvard 22-12 in the third quarter and enjoyed a three-point lead with 10 minutes to play.
A 13-3 run – including nine points by Healy – put the Crimson back on top, 55-47, with 5:41 to play in the fourth quarter. Raster started the quarter with a lay-in off a back-door cut and Healy ended the rally with a jumper over two defenders in the lane. After four-straight points by Goodwine, Healy nailed a jumper in the short corner and Tummala was there with a steal on the defensive end to lead to two free throws and a 61-55 advantage with one minute to play. The Crimson connected on their free throws down the stretch to take home the victory.
Harvard stays on the road, heading to South Florida (Dec. 3) and Florida Gulf Coast (Dec. 5) next week.
Game Notes: AnnMarie Healy posted double-figures for the sixth time this season and the 29th time of her career with 13 points. Kit Metoyer posted double-figures for the third-straight time with 15 points. For the fifth time this season, Shilpa Tummala registered double-figures with 11 points.
Sydney Skinner posted a career high with 13 points. Harvard went with the starting lineup of Healy, Redford, Tummala, Metoyer and Raster for the third-straight game. The Crimson moves to 3-0 with that starting five. Texas natives – Nunley, Metoyer and Skinner – combined for 32 points. Four players posted double-figures for the third-straight game.
