Women’s Tennis Runs Streak to Seven With Win Over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – MIT's women's tennis ream ran its season opening winning streak to seven this afternoon when the Engineers defeated Wheaton College, 9-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match. The victory clinched the Engineers at least a share of the regular season conference crown as well as the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament later this month.

After taking the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches by 8-1 and 8-2 scores, it was up to the No. 1 pairing of sophomore Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) and junior Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) to complete the sweep for MIT (7-0, 7-0 NEWMAC). The team did just that, taking an 8-4 win over Izzy Gorham and Caroline DINicola-Fawley to complete the sweep of the doubles points.

Wheaton (4-4, 3-3 NEWMAC) could not put a dent in the MIT advantage in singles play, as the Engineers won all six matches in straight sets. Liu won the first match for MIT, taking a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 3 before junior Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) clinched it for the Engineers with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Stassy Fuber.

Sophomore Rena Liu (Oak Hill, Va.) picked up the third singles decision for MIT with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Caroline Stanclift in the No. 4 match. Playing at No. 5, senior Alana Peters (Kenilworth, Ill.) made it four-for-four with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Connor O'Keefe. Sophomore Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) and senior Ava Soleimany (Newport Beach, Calif.) completed the win for MIT with straight sets decisions in the No. 1 and No. 6 contests.

MIT will be off until next Saturday when the Engineers will complete their NEWMAC schedule by hosting Smith College at Noon.
