BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Wheaton College women's tennis
team earned a 9-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) win over Emerson College on Friday afternoon at the Winchester
Indoor Tennis Courts.
The win improves the Lyons season record to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in
the NEWMAC. The Lions fall to 0-5 on the season and in conference play.
Doubles action saw 8-1 wins from the Lyons No. 1 and No. 2 teams, while the No. 3 pair won their
match by withdraw.
Playing as Wheaton's No. 1 singles player, Izzy Gorham
had a battle on her hands with Janie CoConis. CoConis defeated Gorham
6-1 in the opening set, but the Wheaton senior kept fighting. Gorham
went onto take the second set 6-3, before winning the third 10-6.
Caroline DiNicola-Fawley's
match proved to be the winning match with the senior defeating Janie
Yates 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 position. Like DiNicola-Fawley, both Caroline Stanclift (No. 4) and Connor O'Keefe (No. 5) won their matches 6-0, 6-0.
Stassy Furber took down Lalin Tasa 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 spot, while Arielle Klopsis (No. 6) won her match by withdraw.
The Lyons return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. at the Clark Tennis Courts in a NEWMAC contest against MIT.
