Salem, Mass. -- In the 88th minute of play, Kaelyn Silveira (Bristol,
RI) scored the game tying-goal off a free kick for the Gordon College
Fighting Scots to force a 1-1 draw against the Salem State Vikings
Wednesday night at Alumni Field. Gordon is now 3-4-3 on the season while
Salem State goes to 4-6-1.
Despite a scoreless first half, the
Vikings' offense kept Gordon's goalie McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, MA)
busy as she saved all five shots that were on net. Midway through the
second half, Victoria Clancy (Dorchester, MA) broke the stalemate as she
rifled a shot from the left corner of the Fighting Scots box that beat
Dion on the right side to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. However, with two
minutes left, Silveira saved the day for Gordon as she buried a free
kick from just outside the box that forced the game into overtime.
In
overtime, the Vikings had multiple scoring opportunities due to the
lack of ball pressure from the Fighting Scots, but were unable to find
the back of the net as the game ended in a 1-1 draw after 20 minutes of
overtime.
Salem State's offense dominated Gordon as they outshot the Fighting Scots 21-6, but only had one goal to show for it. Melissa Toomey (Saugus, MA) made four saves while Dion finished with nine.
Salem
State will travel to Bridgewater State on October 10th to take on the
Bears in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup at
noon. The Fighting Scots season will continue on October 10th as well,
when they take on conference opponent East Nazarene at 12:30 p.m.
