Three Goals Lifts Women's Soccer Over Emerson

NORTON, Mass. - Three goals helped the Wheaton College women's soccer team take down visiting Emerson College 3-1 on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Christina Mirrione '99 Stadium.

With the win the Lyons improve to 8-5-1 on the season and pick up three much needed points in the NEWMAC standings, improving to 2-2-1 overall. The Emerson Lions fall to 9-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the NEWMAC.

Wheaton outshot Emerson 20-10, while also holding a 6-3 advantage in corners.

Kaylee Sye got the scoring started with an opportunistic goal in the ninth minute of action. After a
corner kick by Julia Cipriano was punched into the air by the Emerson keeper, Sye managed to get a foot on the ball, turning and volleying it into goal.

It took Emerson just a minute and a half to respond with an equalizer. Paige Haley knotted the game up at 1-1 with a goal at the 10:39 mark thanks to a well played ball over the top that put Haley in a one-v-one situation. Beating her defender, Haley calmly pushed the ball under an oncoming Leann Wolf.

Wheaton had several good looks to start the second half, but would not find the back of the next again until the 70th minute. The goal came off a cross from the right side of the field by Cipriano to Alyssa Gilman at the top of the 18-yard box. Gilman ran onto the ball and calmly chipped it over the Emerson keeper.

A made penalty kick in the 89th minute by Cipriano gave the the Lyons their insurance goal.
With the win, Wolf collected her seventh complete game victory of the season.

The Lyons return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 15 for a 4 p.m. non-conference match-up against Lasell at Mirrione Stadium.
