Salem, Massachusetts -- Hannah Carnes
(Taunton, MA) scored late in the first half to help the Framingham
State field hockey team edge Salem State 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at
Alumni Field. The Rams enhance their record to 2-7 and 1-4 in the Little
East Conference while the Vikings drop to 2-8 and 0-5 in the LEC.
Bailey Donelly (Framingham, MA) put Framingham State on the board when she put home a rebound that was initially shot by Cady Kelly (Canton, MA). Taylor Nawn (Auburn, MA) stopped the Rams from adding to their lead midway through the first half when she denied Framingham's Carnes and Kirsten Terrien (Attleboro, MA) on a two-on-one breakaway. However, Carnes wouldn't be denied again as she buried a one-timer from Amie Souza (Taunton, MA) to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
The Vikings' offense showed signs of life when Kelsey Russell (Arlington, MA) cut Salem State's deficit to 2-1 late in the second when she struck a one-time pass past the Rams' goaltender Rosemary Talbot
(Whitinsville, MA). Moments later, Salem State had a chance to tie the
game at 2-2 when Nawn scored a goal, but it was disallowed due to a
penalty. The Rams' defense held off the Vikings last minute rally and
went on to win 2-1.
Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, MA) made an impressive 10 saves in net for Salem State, while Talbot stopped five shots in the victory.
The Vikings will travel to Plymouth State University to take on the
Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on October 7th while the Rams travel to UMass
Dartmouth to face off against the Corsairs at 7:00 p.m. on the same
day.
