CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Kathleen Young potted a pair of goals and junior Marissa Balleza racked up three assists to power the Harvard field hockey team (6-3) to a 4-0 victory Sunday over Fairfield (4-5).
The shutout is the third of the season for the Crimson, with senior Issy Davies making three stops in net before being relieved by Olivia Startup who played 14:37 without facing a shot on goal. Elizabeth Warner also made a defensive save to preserve the shutout.
"I'm very happy with the win today, it was a great team performance," said head coach Tjerk van
Herwaarden. "It was great that Kathleen Young was able to get two goals today as a freshman. We connected much better today and came out with a positive energy which set us up for a really good game."
Harvard's first goal of the contest came at 6:58 off a penalty corner. Balleza fired a shot from the top of the arc that Hannah Wellington redirected into the bottom left corner to give Harvard a 1-0 lead. The goal was Wellington's first of the season.
Madison Jung tallied Harvard's second goal on the day in the 27th minute. Off a restart, Sarah Finnemore slipped a pass to Jung in the center of the arc. Jung collected the pass, made a quick spin move and fired a shot past the Fairfield goaltender that banked in the left side of the cage.
After the intermission, Balleza and Young hooked up for two goals to extend Harvard's lead to 4-0. The first came at 37:08 when Balleza, working on the end line to the right of the cage, fed a pass to a wide-open Young on the far post where she one-timed the ball into the open area for her second goal of the season.
She tacked on her third of the year in the 45th minute. On the opposite side of the cage, Balleza found Young near the left post; the rookie deked past the goalie and smoothly pushed the ball into the cage to cap the scoring for the day.
Harvard will play its third-straight home game next weekend, hosting Brown in an Ivy League clash Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
