BOSTON — The Coast Guard medevaced a 77-year-old man from the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn Thursday approximately 12 miles outside Boston Harbor.
A crewmember aboard the cruise ship called the Coast Guard Sector Boston Command Center and reported they were about 60 miles southeast of Nantucket with a passenger suffering from signs of cardiac distress.
A 45-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Boston responded to the call for help and rendezvoused with Norwegian Dawn. The station crew then transported the patient, his spouse, and Norwegian Dawn medical staff to the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal in Boston where his care was transferred to awaiting emergency medical services personnel. EMS transported the patient to Massachusetts General Hospital.
"Effective coordination among crews at Station Boston, Sector Boston Command Center, and the Norwegian Dawn crew ensured the patient was in the hands of medical professionals as quickly as possible,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Brandon McCloud, the response boat coxswain. “Training year-round helps us respond to these situations as soon as possible, and our crew was more than prepared to assist this man in his time of need.”
