University of Massachusetts Baseball Downs Harvard, 6-2 for Second Straight Win

The Minutemen defeated the Crimson in the Beanpot Consolation Game on Wednesday in Northboro, Mass.
NORTHBORO, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball pounded out 14 hits en route to a 6-2 victory over Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation Game at the New England Baseball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutemen’s second straight win moves the squad to 9-17 on the season, while the Crimson falls to 12-20 overall.

Harvard scored the first run of the day in the top of the first as Mitch Klug reached with a one-out double and scored on an error with two away.

UMass responded, though, with two runs in the bottom of the inning. A hit batter bookended by
infield singles loaded the bases for the Minutemen in the first. Then with two away, sophomore Hunter Carey sent a two-run single up the middle that brought in sophomore Brett Evangelista and junior Dylan Morris.

The Minutemen scored again in the second inning as Morris plated freshman Ryan Lever with a sacrifice fly that increased the UMass lead to 3-1.

Harvard took the run back in the top of the third to make it a one-run game once more. Drew Reid reached on an error to lead off the inning and later came in on a fly ball to right by Patrick Rothenberg.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Minutemen regained their two-run cushion. Evangelista singled with one out and later scored from second on an error.

Harvard put the tying runs in scoring position, loading the bases in the sixth and seventh, but each time UMass pitching held the Crimson off the board to preserve the 4-2 advantage
The Minutemen went on to add two more insurance runs courtesy of senior John Jennings’ team-leading sixth home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning and an RBI single by Hart in the bottom of the eighth.


Freshman Casey Aubin started on the mound for UMass and collected the win (2-2), allowing two unearned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out five without walking a batter, as well.  Harvard starter Kevin Rex took the loss (0-2) as he surrendered three runs on five hits and struck out two in an inning of work.

The Minutemen will be back in action this Fri., Apr. 22, when the squad will open its Atlantic 10 series vs. La Salle at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
