UMass Boston Baseball Avenges Big Loss, With 12-4 Win At Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I.— UMass Boston baseball avenged their biggest loss of the season, with seven runs over the final three innings in a 12-4 win over host Roger Williams University.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 12, Roger Williams 4
(UMass Boston 12-11)
(Roger Williams 10-12-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Three weeks to the day of a 17-3 loss at the hands of the Hawks, UMass Boston struck for 12 runs on 10 hits, in the second and final meeting between the two squads.

Junior shortstop Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) led the offense by going 2-for-4 with two runs
scored, three RBI and a walk. Freshman Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) added two hits, a run scored and two RBI, while Bryan Dupre (Chicopee, Mass.) came off the bench with two RBI in his lone plate appearance.

Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.), Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn.) and Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) all ended the day with two runs scored.

On the mound, sophomore Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) earned his first win of the season, by going five innings. The sophomore lefty allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and struck out seven.
Out of the pen, freshmen Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.), James Leidhold (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and sophomore Alex Carusotto (Pittsfield, Mass.) combined to allow just two walks and no hits over four scoreless innings.

Roger Williams starter Jimmy Hamilton was charged with the loss, as he went just 2.2 innings. The junior allowed four hits, three walks and five earned runs, to fall to 2-4.

After Roger Williams scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second, UMass Boston struck back for five runs in the top of the third.

With the bases loaded and one out, Mantoni gave the Beacons their first lead, with a two-run single that scored Lopez and Herzog. Murphy followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1, as Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) easily scampered home. After an out and a walk to load the bases, Boudrias made it 5-2 with a two-run single that scored Murphy and Mantoni.

Roger Williams got themselves back into the game in the fourth, as they struck for three runs on three hits. Jamie Timothy cut the deficit to 5-2 with an RBI triple and Liam Smith later added an RBI single to make it 5-4.

Frosceno settled down from there, as he struck out the final four batters he faced in his five-inning outing.

The Beacons gave their bullpen some insurance runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two down, Dupre laced a pinch hit, two-out, two-run single to left-center field to plate Murphy and Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.).

Murphy pushed the lead out to 9-4 in the eighth, as he came through with a two-run, two-out single, to easily score Lopez and Mantoni.

The Beacons tacked on three more runs in the ninth without the benefit of a hit. With the bases loaded thanks to a walk and two hit by pitches, Lopez drove in Boudrias with an RBI groundout. On the next play, Danielson reached on an error and Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) came home to score. The Beacons tacked on one final run after a pitching change, as Herzog raced home on a wild pitch.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Frosceno's seven strikeouts and five innings of work were both season-highs. His seven strikeouts ties his career-high, which he set on April 15 of last season at Roger Williams University.
  • Seven of the Beacons 12 runs came with two outs.
  • With the win, UMass Boston improved to 8-4 all-time against the Hawks and snapped a two-game losing streak against Roger Williams.
  • UMass Boston's 12 runs marked the fifth time in 23 games the Beacons have recorded double-digit runs scored. The Beacons hadn't scored double-digit runs in back-to-back games since March 14-15 of last season. The Beacons scored 11 runs in an 11-7 win over Muskingum University and then added 15 in a 15-3 win over SUNY New Paltz.
  • The win also puts UMass Boston back above .500 for the fifth time this season. UMass Boston has only gone two games above .500 once this season (10-8).
