Springfield College Softball Picks Up Two Victories Over Westfield State in Non-Conference Play

Westfield, Mass. - Led by impressive performances from Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.) and Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.), the Sprignfield College softball team won a pair of non-conference games against Westfield State on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the wins, Springfield is now 23-11 on the year, while the Owls fall to 11-18 overall. The Pride took the first of two, 5-3, in nine innings, before turning around and beating Westfield State in the second, 8-0, in six innings.

Up next, Springfield will travel to Wellesley for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Friday, April 22 at 3 and 5 p.m.

Springfield 5, Westfield State 3 (9 Innings) -- Game One
A four-run top of the ninth inning proved to be the difference maker in the first of two against
Westfield State, as the Pride were able to escape with a 5-3 win on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, Springfield improved to 22-11, while the Owls fell to 11-17 on the year.

As she has been doing all season, Loda strung together another impressive performance, as the Athletic Training major pitched all 9.0 innings, giving up just four hits and one earned run, while matching her career high, striking out ten batters en route to her 10th win of the year.

Offensively, Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.), who has now reached first base safely in the Pride's last 10 games, was 2-for-3 from the dish with an RBI. The heart of Springfield's lineup, Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.), Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.) and Drobiak ,as well as Simone Morin (Plantsville, Conn.) also added RBI in the win as well.

Westfield State struck first with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pride quickly answered with a run of its own in the top of the fifth inning, when Webb singled to left field, scoring Morin to even the score at one apiece.

It took until the top of the ninth to break the tie, but the Pride rattled off four runs, starting with a single to center from Morin, scoring Sam Cox (Longmeadow, Mass.), followed by a bunt single from Nelson to plate the junior. Two batters later, Drobiak reached first on fielders choice, allowing Loda to cross home, before Joseph plated Nelson with an infield single.

Despite the Owls striking twice in the bottom half of the frame, Loda was able to get out of the inning and preserve the Springfield win.

Springfield 8, Westfield State 0 (6 Innings) -- Game Two
In the second of two at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday, the Pride got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the top of the first to help Springfield to an 8-0 win over Westfield State. With the victory, Springfield improved to 23-11 on the season, while the Owls fell to 11-18.

The Pride received another dominating pitching performance from Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.), who pitched 5.0 innings of one hit ball and striking out six, and Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) came in to strikeout the side in the sixth to preserve the shutout.

Springfield scored two runs in the top of the first inning, after back-to-back base knocks from Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) and Nelson, Drobiak delivered a two-run double to make it 2-0, Pride, after one.

The Pride would add a pair more in the top of the third and fourth, as Drobiak came up big again, driving a ball over the left field fence, also scoring Webb in the third, before Gasdia scored on an error, and Webb drove in Nelson with an RBI single to make it 6-0, Springfield.

The final two runs for the Pride would come in the top of the sixth, when Nelson and Webb both drove runners in to cap off the 8-0 win.
