Riley Scores Season-High Eight Goals in Vikings 19-9 Win

Salem, Mass. – Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) scored eight goals to lead Salem State to a 19-9 win over Mass Maritime in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. The Vikings improve to 6-6 and pick up their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory and are now 1-3 in the league. The Buccaneers slip to 4-7, and 1-3 in conference.

Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) – four goals, Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) – three goals, ,Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.) two goals, three assists,  and Dailey Hancock (Stoughton,Mass.) and Chelsea Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) – one goal apiece with Smith registering three assists all contributed to the victory.

Meghan Doherty (Malden, Mass.) – three goals, Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) – three goals,
and Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.), Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.) one goal each led Mass Maritime in scoring.

Riley opened the game with a goal for the Vikings as she notched four opening half scores. Hancock and Conlon added back-to-back scores before Riley added her second, putting Salem State up 4-0. Doherty then added a free position goal to put the Buccaneers on the scoreboard. Mass Maritime's Solari and Salem State's Courtney Smith exchanged scores before Overstreet cut the deficit to 5-3 with her 18th goal of the year. Riley matched Overstreet's score at the 5:23 mark as Salem State closed out the half on a 4-1 surge. Riley and Woodin each netted two goals during the run.      

The Vikings opened the second half outscoring the Buccaneers 6-2 to take a 15-6 lead. Doherty added consecutive scores for Mass Maritime, but the Vikings dominated possession in the offensive end, outshooting Mass Maritime 19-7 in the second half. A goal by Hunt drew the Buccaneers to within 15-9, but Salem State closed out the game with four straight scores, three by Riley to earn the win, 19-9.

Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) made four saves to even her record at 6-6. Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) stopped 11 shots in the loss to slide to 4-7 on the season.

Salem State travels to Bridgewater State for a match on Saturday, April 23 at 5:30 PM. Mass Maritime will host Framingham State on Saturday for a noon start.
