No. 25 Baseball Falls at Nichols, 13-6

DUDLEY, Mass. – The No. 25 Amherst College baseball team rallied back to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, however Nichols went on to score eight runs in their final two at bats to down the Purple & White, 13-6 Tuesday afternoon at the Nichols Baseball Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 

  • After falling behind 5-0 after three innings of play, Amherst began to battle back in the top of the fifth, recording three runs to make it a 5-3 contest as Yanni Thanopoulos '17 followed back-to-back singles with a single of his own to right center to score Max Steinhorn '18. Ariel Kenney '18 notched another run for the Purple & White two batters later, sending a sacrifice fly to left center to score Thanopoulos.
  • Amherst would decrease their deficit to one in the sixth with sophomore Sam Ellinwood sending a sacrifice fly deep to center field to score Anthony Spina '17 who tagged up on the play.
  • In the seventh, Kenny and Dave Cunningham '16 would each tally an RBI to give the Purple & White their first lead of the game, 6-5, however Nichols would rally and score two runs in the bottom of the inning and six runs in the eighth to claim the 13-6 win.
  • Thanopoulos and Conner Gunn '16 led the Amherst offense with two hits each, with Thanopoulos finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Gunn going 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Three Nichols batters notched three hits apiece, with Ben Harrow going 3-for-3, with two runs and an RBI to pace the Bison offense.  Nick Roy went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, while Ross Caswell finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's and a run.
  • Mike Dow '19 tossed three innings in the start for Amherst, allowing six hits and five runs. Seven other pitchers took the mound to complete the game for the Purple & White, with George Long '17 (1-1) taking the loss after pitching an inning an allowing four runs on four hits.
  • Tabbed with the start Jack White pitched five innings for the Bison, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two. Nichols utilized four other pitchers to secure the win, with Cam Beulieu (2-0) earning the victory after tossing 0.2 innings and allowing two hits.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Nichols outhit Amherst, 17-11.
  • The Amherst pitching staff combined for a strikeout and six walks, while the Bison's fanned four and walked three.
  • The Purple & White left 12 runners on base, while Nichols stranded nine.
