No. 22 MIT Earns First Ever Win Over Tufts In Split Twinbill With Jumbos

Sophomore Jasmin Joseph
MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 22 nationally ranked MIT softball team earned its first ever win over Tufts University in a split doubleheader with the Jumbos on Tuesday afternoon at Spicer Field. The Engineers claimed game one, 6-3, before falling in the nightcap by an 11-2 final. Prior to today's first contest, MIT had been 0-7 in the all-time series against Tufts which dates back to 2005 and featured play between the two programs in last year's NCAA Division III Regional Tournament.

With the split today, Tufts became the first team this year to defeat MIT up north as the Engineers rode a program best 19 game win streak into today's doubleheader, a string that stretched from March 24 through Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinal and Gray extended it to 20 after taking down the Jumbos 6-3 in game one.

Game One: MIT 6, Tufts 3
MIT senior Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) earned the win (16-4) as she threw a complete
game – her ninth of the season – allowing three runs (all earned), nine hits – including a home run – alongside six strikeouts. Tufts senior Erica County (Arlington, Mass.) shouldered the loss on seven innings, six runs (all earned), ten hits, six walks and four strikeouts.

The Engineers scored all six of their runs over the first two frames, which included a five-spot in the second. That is all Marshall would need as the only blemish she had over the first five innings came in the form of an RBI single to junior Cassie Ruscz (Wolcott, Conn.). The Jumbos accounted for their other two runs on a solo shot to sophomore Raven Fournier (Springfield, Mass.) and an RBI single to junior Summer Horowitz (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) in the sixth.

After sophomore Jasmin Joseph (Woodland Hills, Calif.) led off the game with an infield single and advancing to third on a sacrifice and wild pitch, senior Tori Jensen (Holliston, Mass.) knocked her in on a hit through the right side. In the second the MIT offense exploded for five runs that featured a two-run single by Joseph, a two-RBI double down the left field line by sophomore Zoe Hinton (Aurora, Colo.) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Kim Veldee (Kirkland, Wash.).

With a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh, Marshall induced a fly out and a pop out, securing MIT's first win in program history over Tufts University, 6-3.

From the leadoff spot, Joseph sparked the MIT offense with a 3-for-5 performance in game one, which included two runs and two RBI, bumping her batting average over the .450 mark. Hinton and Jensen added to the attack, each going 2-for-3 with two and one RBI, respectively on the day.

Game Two: Tufts 11, MIT 2 (Five Innings)
Tufts sophomore Raina Galbiati (Boulder, Colo.) pitched a two-run complete game and improve to 4-2 this season. The sophomore allowed just four hits, two runs (one earned) and registered a pair of punch outs. MIT freshman Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) couldn't get out of the first frame yielding seven runs (two earned), six hits and a walk as her ledger dropped to 5-2 this year.

The Jumbos put the game away early with seven runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a three-RBI double to right center by senior Christina Raso (Burlington, Mass.) and a two-run triple roped to right by Fournier. Tufts added two in the second and two in the fourth on a home run by freshman Christian Cain (Houston, Texas) accounting for its runs.

Trailing 11-0 heading into what was the final inning due to the run rule, MIT broke up the shutout with two scores in the fifth. With two outs in the frame, junior Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) reached on a fielding error and was followed by a double down the line by sophomore Katherine Shade (Glencoe, Ill). In the next AB, joseph roped an infield single to second and advanced on a throwing error scoring Shifflet and Shade for the 11-2 final.

MIT (24-6) hosts WPI for a doubleheader of the top-two teams in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference's (NEWMAC) this year beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon, while Tufts (17-7) travels to Endicott College tomorrow afternoon in an out of league twinbill with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
