WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak today as senior Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) tossed seven strong innings and the Judges defeated Daniel Webster College, 3-1, on Stein Diamond. Brandeis improves to 9-15-1 on the season, 2-1 at home. DWC falls to 6-17.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges got all the scoring they would need in the bottom of the first inning. They benefitted from three DWC walks in addition to two key hits.
  • Senior CF Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon) and rookie 2B Bejamin Bavly (Newton, Mass./Newton South) executed a perfect hit-and-run after a leadoff walk to put runners on the corners with no one out.
  • Two batters later, senior LF Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to open the scoring.
  • After another walk, senior catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) plated classmate 1B Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) with what proved to be the winning run.
  • The Judges left the bases loaded in the second but broke through for one more run in the fifth, when sophomore SS Luke Zeccola (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) plated Bavly.
  • DWC spoiled Miller's shutout bid in the sixth, when Zach Cartwright singled and Dakota Williams doubled with one out. Dan Mullins grounded to short to get one run home, but that was all the Eagles could muster.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – PITCHERS
  • Miller went seven innings and struck out a career high eight DWC batters to improve to 3-5 on the season.
  • He allowed six hits and just one earned run, tossing 114 pitches, 73 for strikes.
  • Rookie Daniel Schupper (Villanova, Pa./Harriton) retired DWC in order in the eighth inning.
  • Healy came on to earn his third save of the season, despite giving up a walk and a double.
  • Healy struck out one and also had an assist from the outfield, throwing out a Daniel Webster hitter trying to stretch a single into a double in the second inning.
  • DWC starter Jared Maloney fell to 1-4 on the season, giving up eight hits and three earned runs over six innings. He walked four and struck out three.
  • Kyle Burns (1.2 IP) and Mike Gamache (0.1 IP) did not allow a hit over the last two innings, as they combined to walk three and strike out three hitters.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – HITTERS
  • Each team had a three-hit performance.
  • Bavly went 3-5 with a run scored for the Judges, while RF Mike Pelletier was 3-4 for the Eagles.
  • Pelletier and Williams' doubles were the only extra-base hits of the game.
