CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team topped Princeton in a 3-0 victory Friday night at the Malkin Athletic Center, winning the Ivy League Men's Volleyball Championship. The win came with set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-18.
Prior to the match, Harvard recognized its three graduating seniors; Branden Clemens, Alec
Schlossman and Alister Bent. Clemens now ranks fourth on Harvard's leaderboard with 565 kills.
Clemens recorded a team-high 10 kills and a .667 hitting percentage, good for his 18th contest with double-digit kills this season. Casey White and Schlossman followed Clemens with nine kills. Four Crimson finished with a match-high four blocks apiece including Marko Kostich, Brad Gretsch, Riley Moore and Clemens.
The Tigers' Devin Stearns tallied a match-high 13 kills and he also notched a team-high three blocks on the night.
With the win, Harvard (12-10, 8-5 EIVA) ranks fourth among the conference, while Princeton (3-18, 3-18 EIVA) places seventh.
After the Tigers knotted the first set at four, the Crimson went on a 9-6 run, extending its lead to five, 13-8. Princeton was unable to see a lead in the first frame as Harvard closed the set with a 6-2 run, including a big block by Kostich and Gretsch for a 25-17 advantage.
Harvard out-hit Princeton .550 to .292 in the second set, and used a 9-0 run to turn a 9-7 deficit into a 16-9 lead. The Tigers would only be able to come within five, 19-14, as the Crimson dominated defensively with 10 total blocks.
The third set saw seven tied scores and two lead changes as the Crimson only allowed the Tigers to have a one-point advantage early in the frame, 4-3. A solo block by White, put Harvard up by three, 15-12, and the Crimson took match point with an 11-6 run, which ended with White's ninth kill of the night.
