The decision marked the third time this season that the River Hawks have won two consecutive games, and the second time they have won back-to-back games by shutout in the program's Division I era.
"The guys came out sharp and disciplined," said Head Coach Christian Figueroa. "We've had a game plan all season and we've been preaching to go out and execute and I think the guys were much more focused today than they had been in the last few weeks. To come out here and get the win with the shutout is huge for us this time of season."
Jay Marchand (North Andover, Mass.) gave the hosts the 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, after putting
home the rebound off of Paul Beatty's original shot. The tally was the second of the senior's season, the first coming on September 13 against Canisius.
At the end of the first 45 minutes, UMass Lowell held a 4-3 advantage in shots, including a 2-0 edge in shots on goal.
UMass Lowell took no time to add to its lead in the second half, going up 2-0 in the 48th minute when Jacob Fitzgerald (Pepperell, Mass.) had his first shot saved, but gathered the rebound in the eight-yard box and floated the ball into the open net.
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) came within inches of giving the hosts a 3-0 lead, but he attempt was cleared of the line by a Stony Brook defender in the 51st minute.
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) made his toughest save in the 75th minute, with a streaking Alejandro Fritz letting a shot go from the right side forcing Kroll to make a stop near the post. The sophomore recorded his America East-leading sixth shutout of the season with three saves, each coming in the second half.
The Seawolves' Martin Giordano recorded a game-high five shots, and Jason Orban made four saves. Fernandes had three shots for the River Hawks, leading the team with Fitzgerald and Marchand with two shots on goal apiece.
UMass Lowell continues its America East slate with a clash against Albany at 8 p.m. on October 17.
