- The Lead: The MIT softball team improved to 11-4-1 overall and 5-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this afternoon as the Engineers swept Coast Guard by scores of 7-2 and 3-2 (eight innings) in a conference doubleheader at Briggs Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:

- MIT scored twice in the bottom of the first inning after senior Amanda Lee (Saratoga, Calif.) doubled home sophomore Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.). Goetz began the frame with a bunt single and senior Jasmin Joseph (Woodland Hills, Calif.) reached on a fielding error. Then with two outs and with runners on second and third, Lee scored MIT's second run on a dropped fly ball during Zoe Hinton's (Aurora, Colo.) at-bat.
- The Engineers added one in the second on an RBI single by Lee and three in the fourth which came from an RBI groundout by Lee, and RBI groundout by sophomore Sarah Von Ahn (West Linn, Ore.) and an RBI single to right center by sophomore Michelle Wist (Cypress, Texas) as MIT held a 6-4 lead through four. The rally in the fourth began after the Engineers loaded the bases on an error and back-to-back singles by Goetz and Joseph.
- Coast Guard was able to cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when the Bears scored once on a sacrifice fly by Emma Hvozdovich and once when Charlee Kraiss scored on a passed ball which made the score 6-2 through five. The Bears loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning looking for more runs, but relief pitcher Amber VanHemel (Coconut Creek, Fla.) got three straight outs in the air to hold the visitors off the board.

- VanHemel returned to the circle for the seventh after the Engineers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and got the three Coast Guard batters out in order to preserve the 7-2 win for MIT and earn her first save of the spring.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT starter Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) improved to 6-2 in the circle for the Engineers as she threw five innings allowed four hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and struck out two, while VanHemel earned her first save of the spring and the second save of her career in game one as she held the Bears without a hit and struck out two over the final two frames. Coast Guard starter Julia Ferris took the loss (6-3) on four innings, seven hits, six runs (one earned), two walks and a strikeout.

- Goetz was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs from the leadoff spot for the Engineers, while Lee went 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run. As a group, the top four hitters for MIT went a combined 8-for-14 in game one, scored six of the Engineers seven runs.

- On the base paths, Goetz, Joseph, Lee and Von Ahn all stole on base apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:
- As they did in game one, the Engineers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning for the early 2-0 advantage. Goetz began the frame with a single through the left side and was immediately brought home on an RBI triple to left by Joseph. In the very next at-bat, Lee plated Joseph on an infield single.

- Despite both teams having scoring chances throughout the game, neither team was able to grab a run until Coast Guard tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs in the seventh and with runners on first and third, Courtney McKenna singled in Kraiss and then Malia Hindle earned a bases loaded walk to tie the score at 2-2. Nasser, who came on in relief earlier in the inning, got out of the jam when she got Claire Hurley to pop out which eventually led to the game being decided in extra innings.
- In the top of the eighth, Emily Hogan dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Hurley to third, but in the next at-bat, Hurley was tagged out trying to score on a bunt by Carly Hattman. Nasser then struck out Kraiss to end the threat and gave MIT a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning.

- After Von Ahn was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker, Wist laid down a perfectly executed bunt and was safe at first on a wild throw by McKenna which allowed Von Ahn to score to give MIT the 3-2 win as well as the two-game sweep.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lee and Sierra Rosenzweig (Anchorage, Alaska) both tallied to hits apiece to lead the offensive attack for the Engineers. Sophomore Madi Pickett (Santa Barbara, Calif.) registered a double and Joseph notched her second triple of the day in game two. In total, seven different Engineers tallied hits in the nightcap.
- VanHemel, who got the start for MIT, did not get a decision despite throwing the ball very well over the first 6.2 innings. She allowed two runs (one earned), nine hits, four walks and struck out four Bears. Nasser, who came on in the top of the seventh, did pick up the win (7-2) as she tossed the final 1.1 innings for MIT. Sydney Arendt (5-2) took the loss on seven innings, nine hits, three runs (two earned) and a strikeout.
UP NEXT:
- MIT returns to action on Tuesday, April 3 when the Engineers travel to Tufts University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
