PRINCETON, N.J. – The Harvard men's water polo team
finished second overall at the Ivy Championships, downing No. 10
Princeton, 12-6, in the semi-finals before falling to No. 10 Brown in
the title game, 13-8.
In the opener at Princeton, Harvard used a strong second half to pull
through for a 12-6 victory, snapping a 15-game losing streak against
Princeton to earn its first win over the Tigers since 2001.
Harvard took a 4-2 lead after the first period of action as Ben Zepfel led the Harvard attack with a pair of goals while Blake Lee and Dan Stevens
chipped in with a goal apiece. Princeton netted two goals late in the
second frame to tie the game up at four heading into halftime.
The Crimson came out on fire to start the second half, scoring five
goals, highlighted by a sweet lob over the Princeton keeper by Lee as
Harvard took a 9-5 lead. Colin Woolway
and the Crimson defense continued to shut the Princeton attack down,
while Harvard's attack stayed strong, adding a trio of goals in the
final frame as Zepfel netted his game-high fourth goal of the contest to
cap the 12-6 win over Princeton and advanced to the Ivy Championship
title game for the first time in program history.
However, Brown got the best of Harvard for the third time this season, handing the Crimson a 13-8 loss in the title game.
Brown took a 3-1 lead after the first period as Colin Chiappello got
Harvard on the board. Harvard came back in the second frame to make it a
7-5 game as Joey Colton netted a pair of goals and Nick Bunn
and Lee each netted a goal. Brown registered a trio of goals in each
period of the second half to hand Harvard the 13-8 loss. Colton, Robbie Fluegge and Viktor Wrobel each found the back of the net for the Crimson in the second half.
The Crimson stand at 9-8 on the season and 6-3 in CWPA Northern
Division play. Harvard will return to action on Friday as it will embark
on its annual California road trip, competing at The Rodeo tournament,
hosted by Santa Clara from Oct. 23-25.
